Ex Cathedra’s Christmas Carols by Candlelight

Watch on Sky Arts

Ex Cathedra is a leading UK choir and Early Music ensemble with a repertoire that reaches from the 12th to the 21st centuries. Each year, the company gives exceptional, atmospheric and visually stunning Christmas Music by Candlelight concerts.

The concerts explore the meaning, and humour, of the Christmas season in its broadest sense. They gently spotlight topical themes such as migration, explore the wonder of the universe, and acknowledge anniversaries such as the Moon landings. Composers range from Hildegard of Bingen and Latin American Baroque to Roxanna Panufnik and Eriks Esenvalds –complete with tuned wine glasses.

The Space supported Ex Cathedra to capture their 2019 concert – recorded at the beautiful Georgian church of St Paul’s in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter – and audiences were able to watch an exceptional concert that featured music from across 600 years, from around the world, and with a very high proportion of music by living composers. This atmospheric concert was performed by candlelight, with processions and readings which add to the visual impact.

The work is available to watch on Sky Arts.
