As a not-for-profit support organisation working in the cultural sector, The Space offers free general resources to help you tackle, respond to and reduce online abuse that your organisation and staff might face.
However, organisations often face specific issues responding to online abuse or want hands on help making improvements. We therefore offer bespoke consultancy to help you:
- Ensure you have robust policies and processes in place that follow sector best practice
- Reduce reputational risks posed by negative public comments in your organisation’s social media spaces and online harassment aimed at your organisation or at specific staff
- Improve safeguarding and online privacy to protect your team’s wellbeing
- Assess if your response to managing online abuse aligns with your organisation’s values
Online training
We can offer bespoke webinars, facilitated working groups and one to one training, usually delivered online, that provides practical advice on tackling online abuse and related issues. Please get in touch with us using the contact details below to discuss your requirements.
Consultancy
For organisations require in depth or hands on support, we can provide tailored consultancy to fit your requirements and budget. This often begins with a social media risk audit.
Social media risk audit
Typically, an audit will review:
- Your organisation’s recent social media content and public responses to it, including the objectives of those accounts and alignment with your wider values and strategy
- Social media moderation logs to identify patterns in online abuse and areas of risk
- Internal social media policies and processes – do they follow best practice and are staff confident using them?
- Any public-facing social media house rules and community guidelines
- Safeguarding and privacy policies and support for staff – is their wellbeing protected?
- Emergency communications policies – do your staff know what to do if things escalate?
Our approach is consultative and sensitive to the fact that online abuse and the issues that cause it can be very emotive for those on the receiving end. There are no perfect solutions to creating online safe spaces, but we will draw on our extensive experience in social media moderation and your knowledge of your organisation and its audiences to agree recommendations that are supportive and practical for your team.
Outputs from our work
Once the audit is completed, we can provide you with as much support as you might need to implement the recommendations. Other outputs will be based on your needs but might include:
- A public-facing Social Media Communication statement that is aligned with your organisation’s values
- Staff training around policy changes and managing moderation processes
- Easy to use decision-making flowcharts for moderators, to reduce risks and improve consistency of approach
- Online safeguarding and privacy training for your team to better protect them
- Presentations to any relevant stakeholders to ensure organisational buy-in
A word from one of our clients
‘In the last few years, we have seen levels of online abuse escalate across our social media channels, creating reputational issues and concerns about staff welfare. Working with The Space brought clarity to our approach. With their support, we have been able to create a robust strategy to deal with the issue, empowering staff by providing them with clear guidance and support. We are managing safer online spaces as a result and can therefore focus more of our resource and effort on the delivery of our social media strategy.’
