Digital Culture Talks 3 – Day 2

December 4 @ 10:30 am - 3:30 pm

Digital Culture Talks 3 – 4th December

Digital Culture Talks 3 brings together artists, cultural leaders and technologists to explore how creativity can thrive in both physical and digital spaces. Across two days of discussion, case studies and debate, we’ll explore how new technologies are shaping audience experiences, opening up opportunities for collaboration, and reimagining the role of arts and culture in a digital-first world.

This event will highlight inclusive practice, innovative digital performance and how emerging tech can reshape our creative future.

Day 1 will be taking place online and this day will be taking place in person at Phoenix Cinema and Arts Centre, Leicester.

Day 2 – Innovation, Performance & the Future of Digital Culture

10:30am – 11:45am
Place-based partnerships

Place-based collaborations have enormous potential to strengthen creative and cultural ecosystems, bringing long term differences to the cultural life of a region. This session will explore how organisations across the East Midlands can work together to increase cultural engagement, improve wellbeing and grow the local creative economy. Featuring two case studies presented by members of regional consortia who have previously secured funding and delivered Place Partnership programmes we will examine how developing long- term working partnerships can make a difference and create impact for local communities.

Panellists will propose ideas around developing a strategic action plan for a Place Partnership proposal that both super charges the region’s ambitions and recognises its many strengths.

Facilitator: Sarah Vallance, Co-CEO, Phoenix

Speakers and panellists:

11:45am – 12:30pm – Networking lunch (provided)

Screen culture: how artists are using technology to transform how audiences experience performance

What is ‘performance capture’? A multi-camera recording of a live show shot in a theatre or concert hall and distributed through TV or an on-demand digital service? That’s certainly one version and done well it can give viewers a ‘best seat in the house’ experience.

But artists are being increasingly innovative about how they use technology to distil a performance for viewers. They no longer necessarily want to try and reconstruct the experience of being in a venue but rather are choosing and using technology to enhance the creative ambition and audience impact of their work.

Our panel discusses how technology shapes audience experience and how the choice of digital format – whether that’s mobile-first, big screen, VR or others – moulds viewers’ engagement with and impressions of performance work.

Session 3: Combining Digital and Analogue – Should You? And how best to do it!

Lockdown saw the arts sector experiment with digital replacements for in-person experiences, before hybrid events offered a chance to reach at-home audiences while also offering exciting creative opportunities. But with the sector having spent so much time and energy exploring exciting ways of combining digital and analogue, what have we learned – and what do we risk now forgetting?

Facilitator: Rob Lindsay, Head of Programmes, The Space

Speakers and panellists:

  • John Whall, Digital Participation Artist, Curator and Producer
