This webinar is an introduction to virtual production (where a virtual set or computer-generated image is displayed on large LED walls behind a physical set and real-world action). It’s aimed at arts organisations and individual artists / creatives who are interested in finding out more about what it is and how it’s being used in performance and digital arts.

Beyond its established use in movie making, arts organisations and artists have been exploring virtual production for some time – combining physical and virtual worlds to tell stories in new ways.

In this webinar we’ll hear from creatives, leaders in digital development and research practitioners about their creative experiences with VP and their perspectives on the opportunities it brings for performance and digital arts practice.

Speakers:

The webinar will be hosted by one of The Space’s Executive Producers Sarah Butcher. Sarah develops and supports film and broadcast projects at The Space. Sarah started her career in theatre before working in TV, film, interactive arts and digital content. She’s a director/producer and co-founder of North South, who produce cinematic live performance capture and original work for livestream, on demand, broadcast and cinema.

Sarah Ellis, Director of Digital Development, Royal Shakespeare Company

Sarah is an award-winning producer and is Director of Digital Development for the Royal Shakespeare Company cultivating new artistic initiatives and partnerships. The latest partnership for the RSC is the Audience of the Future Live Performance Demonstrator funded by Innovate UK – a consortium consisting of arts organisations, research partners and technology companies to explore the future of performances and real-time immersive experiences.

In this webinar Sarah will discuss the RSC’s exploration with VP over the years alongside its challenges and creative possibilities.

 

Damian Murphy, Director, XR Stories, University of York

Damian is Professor of Sound and Music Computing in the AudioLab at the University of York, UK, where his research focuses on the development and creative application of immersive audio and virtual acoustics. He is an active sound artist and the director of XR Stories who support research, development and innovation in technology-led creative content, experiences, and stories for creative industries companies and organisations. He directs the XR Network+ project, exploring the next generation of UK-led virtual production, XR and convergent immersive and interactive media technologies, and is part of the CoSTAR Live Lab Team, one element of the new CoSTAR network of five labs providing R&D infrastructure for the future of the UK’s screen and live performance sectors.

In this webinar Damian will discuss the capabilities of VP and the value of research partnerships with artists / arts organisations.

 

Kenneth Tindall, Choreographer and Director

Kenny is regarded as one of the outstanding dance-makers of his generation. He is a freelance choreographer/director and Resident Choreographer Northern Ballet. A former principal dancer, Kenneth’s first professional commission won the Production Prize at the 26th International Choreographic Competition in Hanover. He has since gone on to choreograph nationally and internationally, working with Ballet, dance and theatre companies worldwide. He has conceived and directed many dance works on film and has an interest in pairing dance with emerging technologies.

In this webinar Kenny will discuss his VP project ICARUS and his journey as a creative exploring a new way of making dance on screen.
